MartosetomoThe Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, Ambassador Suprapto Martosetomo has implored Batswana to narrow the trade imbalance between Botswana and Indonesia. Ambassador Martosetomo was speaking at a public lecture on February 24, 2016 at the Library Auditorium hosted by the Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Pretoria to increase the regional and global importance of Indonesia and promote Botswana-Indonesia relations. The lecture was also intended to introduce Indonesia to the UB community and members of the public.

According to the Ambassador, last year Indonesia exported sardines worth U$ 1, 060,000.00, raw tobacco worth U$ 1, 000,000.00, synthetic yam worth U$46,000.00 and textile fabric and polyvinyl worth U$ 21,000.00 against Botswana exports to that country of blankets worth only U$3,000.00; revealing a very huge balance of trade deficit between the two countries. He encouraged Botswana to explore more business opportunities to narrow this huge trade disparity.

During the lecture, Ambassador Martosetomo further spoke about the need for a Joint Trade Commission Corridor by pursuing an Indonesia – SACU Preferential Trade Agreement and building stronger connections with Botswana’s business and private sectors to increase trade and investment opportunities. Each Government should encourage a business-to-business relationship to create more trade and business opportunity, he said.
